JonathamO. "YouTube - World´s Strangest Body Modifications (Part 1)." YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. 26 Mar. 2009. Web. 15 Sept. 2009.
This 21-year-old YouTube creator is from Portugal and has the username of JonathamO. It was created on March 26, 2009. There isn’t much background on the YouTube artist other than he compiled these images and has sequels to the video (parts two and three). In an excerpt about himself on his homepage, Jonatham O states, “Someone said one time on the comments that I am the World Strangest Uploader, and probably I am, my name is Jonathan and I have this channel to make videos about the strange things, the marvels in the world, I’m a bit crazy and I love good music, so I make research in the internet about interesting stuff and then combine them with a good music, like you can see in my videos…” He has almost eight million views of his videos so far.
This video really drew me in because it is so unusual. Body modification is a controversial topic because some people view it as “disgusting” yet others think of it as “cool”. There is definitely a “yuck” factor in this video. Some of the images made me cringe. However, I believe that the people who have these body modifications are looking to be different and are looking for some sort of reaction out of people whether it is good or bad. Many people believe that the body is made how it is supposed to stay. Others believe that they should be able to do whatever they want to their body because they own it in a sense. I love these sorts of controversial topics because it makes people talk and react to something that usually isn’t seen everyday.
The subject of this video is the most unusual body modifications. I believe that the artist is trying to show how far some people will go to truly express themselves and make a statement with their bodies. The artist of the video uses graphic images to get reactions out of his audience and subtle, calm music to go with what is being viewed. Whether or not the artist of the video uses calm music to contradict the harsh, graphic images or to try to calm the audience while they are watching the video is somewhat unknown. I think he used the music medium in both ways.
Body modification is art in my opinion. Artists sometimes paint something or draw something depending on what mood they are trying to convey. I feel people use body modification as a way to express inner emotions and feelings directly on their own flesh and bones (literally). Because of this, I believe that body modification represents the emotionalist view in Anderson’s “Quartet of Traditions”. However, it can be argued that body modification represents the instrumental view as well. When people get modifications done to their bodies, they are making an impact on others who look at them in different ways. Body modifications also make a significant impact on society and other art forms. The mimetic view can also be seen throughout this video. Those with the split tongues can sometimes represent a lizard and the burned wings in the back of others could possible represent an angel of some sort, etc.
I believe what we are talking about in class definitely relates to this video. Some people who view these people call them monsters or ugly. Others think it’s interesting and beautiful. I think these different views that people have can be seen with not only body modification, but in other art forms as well whether it be a painting or a tattoo. The “ancestor” of this art could date back to times when cultures made women had to wear rings around their neck to make it longer because it was perceived as beautiful. Other ancient body modifications can also be seen in Egypt where piercings represented the love of beauty. Body modification has been a form of ancient expression thousands of years ago and thousands of years to come.
Rachel,
ReplyDeleteWow is what I have to say about this. I think I almost threw up when I saw some of those things. The corset piercing made me cringe to think about having something like that pulling on my skin. The scarification made me think to myself, " Why in the hell would someone do that? Back in the day people would be branded and it was not enjoyable." Why would people want to hurt themselves to be different? Overall this video was quite disgusting, but it got the point across about the lengths that people would go to in order to impress or be different from the normal american people. This was a good idea to talk about because it shows how the world today can be affected by different cultures and their rituals. When I say rituals I am talking about the neck stretching and the lip and ear stretching. This is also an opportunity to talk about the food bindings and the perfect society figure that people are trying to escape from. I was actually watching this show called intervention about these two anorexic twins and how they thought their bodies were ugly and fat. The whole reason that they feel that way is due to the social pressure that their classmates had put on them, because they would call one of them chubby. They found the need to compete. Do you think this has anything to do with the need to be beautiful and PERFECT in our society as a whole?
Cassie,
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you that this does relate to what is perceived to be beautiful or ugly in our society today. Our society does put pressures on people to be a certain way or to look a certain way. I almost think these people in this video are trying to go against society and the "norm" and not to be perfect. Thanks for your input. It's really appreciated! :)
I saw the three videos. Some of the tribal rituals made me wonder why they invented that custom. For a lot of these, I think in order to be art there would have to be an aesthetic purpose behind them and not just trying to be "cool." True art is much deeper than skin deep and some of the people in these videos undersatnd that and some that I saw I think were just doing it because they thought they needed to in order to be socially accepted. Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that some people solely got these body modifications for attentions. I do think others did these truly as a form of expression and art. Thanks for your input Matt!

ReplyDeleteRachel,
ReplyDeleteI think you chose a very interesting topic that will intrigue a lot of the people in the class. I found the eye-dying the most fascinating, because I have never heard of it or seen it before! I definitely agree when you say that body modification is an expression of art. I also agree when you say, "I believe that body modification represents the emotionalist view in Anderson’s “Quartet of Traditions”". Do you think it could be instrumental too?
Thanks for sharing this!
Hey Rachel,
ReplyDeleteThis was an interesting choice. I cant believe some of the things that they did. I will agree with you that this is a form of art. I felt it was drastic form of art and wonder why some of them did this? Was it for attention, art, or what? The body suspension was crazy, it looks super painful and dangerous. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Zach

alot more of these modifications have to do with different cultures around the world.
These body modifications can be used as examples for our papers having to do with ugly/monster vs. beautiful or having to do with the body in general.. hope I was a help! :)

ReplyDeleteWhen i was watching this video in class I saw a lot of things that I never even knew existed. I knew that there were several things that people could do to themselves for body modifications, but a lot of the things in this video I had never seen or heard of before. Things like eyeball tattooing and implanting objects into your skill to make a design. You were right about the graphics in this video, and some of them were harder to look at. It made me think a lot about why people do these kinds of things to themselves. Tattooing and piercing is something that people see everyday so I don't think that they stand out as much for body modifications. But it made me wonder why people would want to do some of the other things seen in this video. Whether it is because they think it just looks cool, or if they are doing to get some type of attention. Either way it was very interesting to learn about and i enjoyed watching the video to see what other types of modifications are out there.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your post Elissa! Glad you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteRachel:
ReplyDeleteWhen we went to the Fleming Museum yesterday I was struck by Chris's comments (our guide) that often body art was a way of communicating status and heritage. Do you suppose our contemporary versions carry that kind of aesthetic as well?
