Public Art by Tyler Ury

Now some people may think i am lazy for taking a picture of public art in the middle of Champlain College campus, but i have found two interesting errors about this statue! Firstly why is Samuel De Champlain dressed with no shirt or shoes? He came down from New France(Canada) with only shorts on during early spring? It makes even more questionable when you hear how he came to find the lake. When Samuel found the lake he was with a cohort of Native American Indians Champlain and his allied Indians were fighting several tribes of the Iroquois nation on its banks. There was no glorious finding of the lake with his fellow explorers. For Samuel had sent them all home with he boat. He sailed down a river to do battle with the Iroquois Nation in a canoe with his cohort of friendly Native American Indians. So for Sammy boy to be wearing anything else but armor or st least shoes is very inaccurate to say the least. Secondly he looks nothing like the statue! I will give a hyperlink to a more appropriate picture at the end of the blog. i have seen other times where this has happened. whether by the patron wants it a particular way or the artisan takes some liberties with it. a lot of the time in ancient times they would make statues more attractive then the real person. they would change features or hide ugly ones. Now I am not saying that our pal Sam here was ugly. He does not even have his mustache! All i am asking is why make him the way he is portrayed if we already have many pictures of what the Samuel De Champlain really looks like? A much more appropriate statue in his honor would be him Heroically standing with plate and clothing on with his Arquebus(a rifle). For these reasons i have picked this public artwork to talk about. Now for all those people who are just dying to see what the man really looks like, here is a picture from Google. click -> The Real Samuel De Champlain.
I hope everyone enjoyed my little rant on the imperfections of the statue.
